The School of Risk and Safety Sciences provides postgraduate coursework programs to cater for students who wish to pursue a range of careers related to safety and health, ergonomics, the environment or risk management. A wide range of coursework degrees is offered to give students a high degree of flexibility to choose the type of program which is best suited to their background and planned career.

The philosophy behind the programs offered by the School is to provide a multidisciplinary approach where students mix with their peers from a very wide range of backgrounds.

Postgraduate programs are offered in either on campus or in distance mode and are targeted at professionals who work in risk management related professions.

For each course a manual is provided, written by experts from various backgrounds. Each manual contains learning materials and exercises and most courses are also supported by web pages which provide additional materials and the opportunity for discussion with other students in the class.

There is sufficient flexibility in the programs to allow you to undertake electives from other schools or from other Universities where they are relevant to your program. Our philosophy is to allow students to tailor their programs to their individual needs.

POSTGRADUATE COURSEWORK DEGREES

The School provides an articulated learning system in a range of coursework programs. Students can enter the system at different points, depending on their qualifications and experience and graduate with:

These programs are available in six areas :

The Safety Science stream has sub-programs in Occupational Medicine, Industrial Safety (including transport safety), and Occupational Health and Safety Management.

The Graduate Certificate is equivalent to level 8 on the Australian Vocational Education and Training (VET) system. It is a one year part time program which is open to people with a degree or acceptable TAFE qualifications. Applicants with substantial experience might be considered for admission on a case by case basis.

The Graduate Diploma is a one year full-time equivalent program which may be chose by students who are not eligible for direct entry to the Masters degree or who do not wish to undertake a research project.

The Masters Programs may be 1 year, 18 months, or 2 years full time (or equivalent part time), depending on the extent of specialisation. Masters programs normally require a 4 year degree for entry but students may transfer from a Graduate Diploma if they maintain a credit average in that program.

Continuing Education. People who wish to extend their knowledge, but do not want to enroll in a complete program, can enroll in a single (or series of single) course(s). Completion of assessment is optional, but if completed, can count towards a formal qualification later. Not only are these courses a valuable opportunity to extend one's knowledge beyond what might be offered in a one-day training workshop, but they offer considerably more scientific depth than many commercial seminars.
