| Description : | The course is designed to enable you to develop an understanding of physical and chemical hazards encountered in workplaces, to learn about and apply methods used in the assessment of workplace environment, and to develop skill in making measurements in order to assess workplace hazards.
You will also be provided with a list of recommended readings and references on each topic and will be given opportunity to become familiar with various techniques and equipment.
The course takes the form of Study Notes (Reading Material), practical demonstrations, workplace measurements and/or classroom presentations. During the workshop, you will carry out a number of practical measurement projects to assess and report on selected environmental parameters. | | | | | Objectives : |
- Describe and understand the various environmental stressors encountered in workplaces
- Understand the purpose of workplace environmental assessment
- Understand the different types of errors in measurements
- Plan and make measurements in real life situations
- Suggest solutions to common problems encountered in workplaces
| | | | | Reading : | There is no prescribed textbook for this course. The reading material for the course is based mostly on journal articles, instrument manuals, Australian Standards, references and handbooks and most will be provided with the Workshop Notes. | | | |
| ASSESSMENT |

Assessment | Assessment in the Course will be based on the following two components:
- Short-answer exam (during class time on Day 1 of the workshop) - worth 10% The exam questions will be based on the pre-reading, “Unit 1: Methodological Issues in Workplace Assessment”, which will be sent to you before the start of the course. It is therefore important that you study this pre-reading before the workshop and be prepared to be examined on its contents on Day 1.
- Assignments: three short technical reports each - worth 30% each. These reports will be based on practical exercises involving workplace environmental measurements that will be completed during the workshop. Each report will be marked out of a maximum of 30 marks.
Students are expected to achieve a satisfactory level of performance (50%) in each report and in the Exam, and they will ONLY qualify for assessment if they have submitted all three (3) reports and completed the Exam. . | | Details | Due Date | Weight | | In class exam | Day 1 | 10% | | Three workplace envionment assessment/measurement reports | TBA | 30% each |
