Assumed Knowledge : SESC9201 - Safety Risk Management
  
Description : This course builds on material presented in SESC9101 and SESC9201 and deals specifically with safety issues which are of relevance to the environment and/or the community. These include topics such as security management, waste management and environmental management which a safety professional would be expected to deal with, as well as more complex OHS issues such as ionising and non ionising radiation, fire and explosion and major hazards which can have an impact outside of the workplace. Finally some of the principles of emergency management are introduced.
  
Objectives : At the end of the course it is anticipated that students will be able to:
  • Understand the basic concepts relating to the classification and types of natural hazards that present risks to people;
  • Articulate the meaning of key terms such as hazard, risk, vulnerability, resilience, coping capacity and frequency-magnitude;
  • Outline how return period assessments are calculated for a particular type of natural hazard process and outline basic concepts of risk mitigation for natural hazard processes;
  • Understand the basic physical concepts behind assessment of the physical hazards and their control.
  • Articulate the meaning of the key terms associated with each of the physical hazards
  • Outline the process of assessment for the physical hazards and the risk principles behind their mitigation
  • Understand the basic concepts in emergency planning and articulate the key concepts involved.
