COURSE DETAILS
Units of Credit : 6
Description : This course discusses the management of Major Hazardous Facilities and Infrastructure. Australian and overseas legislation is discussed, together with the preparation of safety cases and environmental impact statements. Analysis techniques that are required for these assessments will be discussed including how to identify and quantify the likelihood and the consequences of hazards through the use of modelling. Finally, the requirements for the Safety Management System, security and emergency plans, and accident investigation are discussed.
  
Teaching Objectives : At the end of this course, it is expected that students will be able to :
  1. Understand the safety concepts and language sufficient to be able to communicate effectively with safety engineering professionals and Major Hazards planners.
  2. Define the terms commonly used in the management of major hazardous facilities.
  3. Develop knowledge in the identification and assessment of the risks arising from these installations.
  4. Describe the basic principles of the tools used in the management of hazardous facilities
  5. Commission and evaluate a safety case and environmental impact statement carried out by consultants
  6. Participate as a useful member of a team in the risk management process for major hazardous facilities in the context of health, safety and the environment
  7. Research and analyse issues of safety engineering that are of relevance to the student's background or work;
  8. Utilise the knowledge and skills gained in this subject that are relevant to the student's background or work.
