Description : The course provides an introduction to occupational health and safety and its management. Topics discussed include OHS concepts, OHS law, workers compensation and injury management, incident reporting, training and consultation. Human aspects of OHS management such as safety culture, human behaviour, and human error will be introduced. The assessment of control workplace environment risks is considered with a particular focus on noise and electricity. Students will also learn more about collecting and analysing data for use in OHS applications. The course is the first in the OHS programs and will provide learning skills to be used in subsequent courses. Objectives : At the end of this course it is anticipated that students will be able to:
  • Understand the scope of OHS in Australia
  • Explain the requirements of Australian OHS legislation relating to occupational health and safety
  • Understand the concepts of hazard and risk
  • Identify some types of hazards and contrast them with other hazards
  • Find and evaluate scientific information
  • Develop experimental hypotheses and identify statistical techniques appropriate to testing them
  • Calculate some basic statistics and graphically present data relevant to OHS
  • Understand the scientific method
