He began his professional career as a physicist in the National Radiation Laboratory, Christchurch, New Zealand. He joined the University of New South Wales as Radiation Protection Officer, the first full-time position of its kind in Australasia. After completing a PhD in nuclear engineering in which he investigated a safety aspect of nuclear reactors, he became Head of the University's Safety Unit. He was instrumental in the formation of the Centre for (now School of) Safety Science, and was appointed to it as a foundation senior lecturer. Since 1996 he has been an Honorary Visiting Fellow in the School. Teaching Besides lecturing on radiation protection in the School and elsewhere, Ron has participated in teaching a variety of components in the Safety Engineering and Communication for Safety courses. He has fulfilled a variety of administrative roles within the School. He has been a visiting lecturer and course director in the Australian Pacific Institute of Nuclear Science since its inception. Research Ron's research interests and topics in which he has supervised research degree students (master and doctoral) include: radiation detection, radiation dosimetry, nuclear reactor safety, nuclear fission, radioactive waste disposal, non-ionising radiation, electrostatic precipitation, and safety engineering. He maintains interest in professional certification in radiation protection. Publications He has published more than 40 journal articles and public reports, mainly in the field of applied health physics. He is currently writing a history of the Australasian Radiation Protection Society (ARPS). Executive Support Ron has served on various University committees, contributing in particular as executive member of the Safety Committee and the University's two ethics research committees dealing with human and animal experimentation. External Service Ron was the Foundation President of ARPS, and has served the Society in a variety of roles. In 1988 he convened the International Radiation Protection Congress in Sydney. He served on the NSW Radiation Advisory Council for 9 years. He was the Adviser on Radiation Safety to the Ranger Uranium Environmental Inquiry and subsequently was appointed as an independent Inspector to report on occupational health and safety at the Ranger mine site. He is a member of Standards Australia Committee on Safety in Ionizing Radiation Laboratories. He continues to serve as an external consultant through Unisearch. Awards In 1999 he was awarded a University Jubilee Medallion in recognition of his contribution to the University and to the community. Previously he received merit awards from ARPS and from the Health Physics Society (USA). Recreation Ron's other interests include his family, music and reluctantly gardening. |
